Matsuo Nonaka is director of International Policy Division of the Japan Patent Office (JPO) since January 2016. He received a master’s of engineering from Tohoku University in 1992 and a master of laws from University of Washington School of Law in 2004.
Since joining the JPO in 1992, Mr. Nonaka has served as an examiner and a patent administrative judge in the information technology field. He has broad experience in working outside the JPO. He worked for World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 1998 to 2000, the Secretariat of IP Strategy Headquarters from 2005 to 2007 and Industrial Property Cooperation Center (IPCC) from 2013 to 2015.
From 2010 to 2012 Mr. Nonaka was in charge of international IT cooperation as director for international affairs of IT Planning Office and from 2012 to 2013 he was director of Trial and Appeal Policy Planning Office of the JPO.
